Spiritual Food

1. The most important thing you need in any kind of life style change is spiritual food. One- it helps you have the ability to perservere through the trials you will be facing along the way. The Bible has great examples of people just like yourself that set out to do amazing things and had challenges they had to overcome. The bible will bring to light different ways for you to help reach your goal and give you peace each day.

2. Feed yourself with Christian Music. It is so important to feed your mind with positive things. To hear the word of God all through out your day truly changes your out look on how you see things and will change your attitude over time. The word of God through music can bring a sense of peace and healing. It is amazing for one's soul.

3. Spend time in Prayer. Tell God all your problems. Tell Him every hardship. Believe me, He wants to know all you're going through. He wants to give you a sense of peace. God cares about you more than you will ever know. Remember He sent His Son to die for you- that is how much He loves you (John 3:16.) Spending time with God builds a relationship with him and having this intimacy will help you move a lot of the mountains that are in your way. We all need a supernatural help and God will supply that to all who draw near to Him .

4. Do daily devotions. Start off your morning reading a morning devotion. There are tons from BIlly Graham to Joyce Meyer to Chuck Swindoll to James Dobson to Beth Moore, or even your church may have some. Whatever devotion you decide, get plugged into a morning and evening one and take time to journal over what you discover during your journey. Growing in God seriously will help you conquer your weight loss goals easier.

Addictions

We live in a world where food is so addictive and a huge part of our social lives. We talk with our friends over the best new restaurants to try or we talk about what we had for dinner last night and what we saw on the Food Network by those amazing chefs. And, who can forget, even what foods are we bringing to this months church pot luck. Whatever the case may be, sometime during the day food will come into your conversation.

Now, here is where food can be a blessing. You learn how to take your food cravings and put nutrition into your system. You study how you can utilize food so it is helping you speed up your metabolism to get rid of those extra pounds you don't want. It's knowing how to order off a menu correctly and not just being stuck with a salad every time you go out to eat with your friends. Food can be enjoyable and you don't ever have to feel as though you are starving yourself to reach goals.

Most think it takes programs like Weight Watchers and Nutri System or exercise videos like P90X to lose 20 or 40 pounds. Some think you got to drink slim fast or join gyms to lose weight. I am here to tell you that is SO not the case. You can go for a hike daily and get in a great work out- 30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise can do your body wonders. You can walk stairs up and down for 30 minutes or play basketball or go to a park and jog and do pull ups and chin ups on the monkey bars or buy a cheap jump rope and jump for a half hour. Sit ups and push ups are great too and require no equipment. The most important thing you can ever do before starting any kind of exercise is to get a full medical evaluation from a doctor. This will give you a true gage for what your body should be able to do and what it shouldn't do to prevent health risk and injury. Do yourself a favor and start off this new life style safely before you begin the journey.

How do I start ???

I love the show Biggest Loser. It is wonderful to see the people who work hard and really put the time and work in achieve such dramatic results. In reality, though, it actually stopped me from taking the first step on my own weight loss journey. I didn't think I could lose the weight with out the trainers and nutritionist and all the wonderful things the contestants on the show have at their disposal to help them. I saw many of them losing 10 or more pounds a week and knew that I couldn't do that- so why even try. I can't afford a personal trainer or even a gym membership. I can't afford all of the diet programs that require you to purchase their food and follow a certain program. It looked like a losing battle so I didn't even start. Something that should be and is usually motivating to most was discouraging to me.

Those were all lies from Satan to try to keep me from getting my physical body back in shape- which also kept my mental state out of shape as well with guilt. It was keeping me from what I knew God wanted from me.

After finding out about Bobby's diabetes and our issues with high triglycerides, I knew we both had to do something. The doctor gave me the starting point as I mentioned in my intro blog- cut out as much sugar as possible from foods, and especially from drinks like soda and juice, eat lower fat proteins, cut-out eating anything fried, increase the amount of vegetables and fresh fruit I eat, and limit my carbs and starch intake. So- I stopped soda. That alone saves me several hundred calories a day- and the carbonation is not good for your stomach, kidneys, liver, etc. Then I slowly started eating more salads and not any red meat at first. I used ground turkey in chili and spaghetti and such to cut down the fat.

The second thing I did was start exercising. I did not join a gym. I did not suddenly become a runner. I took it slowly. I started walking in the mall ( you have to remember I live in Oregon and we have only a few months a year to actually enjoy the outdoors...lol.) It seems crazy and something that others do that I would never have done- but it is great. Both Bobby and I started out taking 3-4 walks for at least 30 minutes. We worked up doing one hour of walking at least 2-4 days a week--gradually increasing our pace and now we are up to about 4 miles in one hour. Not anything for the record books- but it is effective exercise. I also use a set of really cheap dumbbells a few times a week to work my arms. I do crunches for ab work. If you can find one cheap, the exercise balls are great to use to for this. Fortunately, I also have access to the apartment building work out room- which has an elliptical machine and treadmill I can use and a weight machine for arms and legs. If you don't have access to one or have a friend who does, you can find many free week passes to gyms and they can give you tips on how to do the exercises without the machines. I can be done if you try. Just remember to also consult your doctor before doing strenuous exercises and always follow basic fitness safety. You don't need to be fancy- you just need to get yourself moving and your blood pumping!

Don't feel defeated. Don't feel you have to lose 5 pounds a week to be successful. Take it one day at a time. Grab an apple instead of a cookie. Eat chicken more instead of burgers. Watch what you put on your sandwiches. Take a walk. Just do it. It is easy to do. Just keep doing it!

Robbyn's Intro

This is Robbyn. I appreciate Bobby sharing some of his story on our blog we decided to create. Exactly a week after Bobby visited his doctor, I too had to go in for my regular check-up. I always hated these for many reasons- I was born with a condition known as Turner's Syndrome so I have been plagued with health and weight issues my whole life. I am on hormone replacement, thyroid medicine, have sleep apnea, high blood pressure, and borderline cholesterol levels. After hearing what the doctor had told Bobby, I was thoroughly dreading the visit. I had heard from 4 doctors before that I needed to lose some weight since I am so short due to the Turner's Syndrome and that overall I needed to watch my health, so I knew I was going to get more of the same this time too. And I did. My cholesterol was still borderline, but I was, like Bobby, told that my triglyceride levels were far too high and I really needed to start worrying about my overall health. I know for both of us, it was a big slap in the face. We knew we should eat better and that we didn't do a lot of exercising, but we knew this was the time to really do something about it while we still could.
We both stopped drinking soda immediately. This was very, very hard. I know I would drink 4-5 a day without blinking. I knew the "diet" thing had never worked for me before but I knew it had to be done now. We were advised to give up all sugary drinks and cut out all sugary foods. Not just that, but try to not eat red meat and really limit the carbs and starches (and I love my potatoes!) as much as possible. I had never reallybeen a salad-eating person either so this was a big challenge for me.
Thankfully, I have had 2 partners in my journey to eat better and get healthier- God and Bobby. I have in 7 months lost almost 30 pounds. I look and feel so much better.
Yes it is hard and takes a lot of work, but it can be done.
We are both looking forward to sharing what we have done so far to help reach our fitness goals.
Thanks for reading and I look forward to hearing from all of you..
TODAY IS THE BEST TIME TO START YOUR JOURNEY TO A HEALTHIER YOU!

Intro

On October 26, 2010 I dragged myself to the doctor for a check-up and (yuck) blood work. Everything seemed to be going okay, until I was about to leave and the doctor called me back into her office. I was then told I was borderline for Type 2 Diabetes. This was on top of my high blood pressure and high cholesterol which I was on medicine for already. To top this off, my triglyceride level was off the charts high and kidney issues that involved an increased creatine level that I already was aware of.

I weighed 260 and, yes, I knew I needed to lose some weight but was very scared when I heard of this new information about the diabetes and that this all put me at severe risk for heart attack and stroke.

On that day, I started my journey to change my lifestyle and become healthier. I could only do this with God's power. I gave up soda- to which I was addicted to- as well as Gatorade. Just these alone were hard enough- but I also gave up most bread, starches including potatoes, all fried foods, and limited the amount of red meat I ate. I began exercising- which is something I had been neglecting for a long time.

Today, almost 7 months later- I have lowered all of my blood work stats- my creatine is down which is a true blessing and have improvement in my kidney functions. My blood pressure and cholesterol medicines have been reduced to very low levels and I am anticipating being taken off those in the next year or so and my triglycerides are down quite a bit as well. The best thing is- I have lost 46 pounds and weigh in at 214.

I have a long way to go yet to reach my goal of 180, but I am doing it and so can you.

This blog is to show that you don't need a trainer, expensive gym memberships, P90X, Weight Watchers, weight loss supplements, and any of these gimmicks that you hear about on TV and in magazines and radio.

With God and a little hard work, you too can achieve great results. I hope this blog as it gets started will help you get motivated to begin a healthier you!

Plugging into God's word and prayer and doing daily devotions has majorly improved my health and helped me fight through the guilt of destroying my body for years and taught me to love and see myself through the eyes of my Heavenly Father!

I will in the future be sharing more details of my journey and how I have gotten this far. I will be posting fitness tips and healthy recipes that I have come to cook and enjoy.

Thanks for reading and I hope that you enjoy this. Let me know what you think and how I can help you. I will answer any of your questions to help you in your fitness goals and in your spiritual walk. If you need prayer I'll be happy to do that with you as well .
Blessings
